Hello, I’m George Boreas.
I write essays, short stories and novels applying René Girard’s mimetic theory to the modern world.
We live in a moment of crisis: a moment of collapse, danger, and opportunity. Old ideologies have failed, and we can only be saved by even older truths. René Girard’s theory is the rediscovery of these. It is a formulation of orthodox Christian anthropology with the categories of modern social science. And we need it for victory in the ongoing culture war.
From Girard’s simple insight that we imitate others in our deepest desires and behaviors we get to a powerful understanding of rivalry, obsession, scapegoating, and the strange religious shape of secular life. I have spent a decade following that idea wherever it leads: into economics, politics, psychiatry and religion. Sometimes the result is an essay, sometimes a novel, sometimes a conversation.
There are six books so far — four of essays and fiction, and two recent ones on Marx and on the psychedelic revival. New writing goes out through the Substack newsletter, and I record the podcast most weeks. Older writing is still in the archive on this site, along with sample newer articles.
If you have read something of mine and you find it interesting, I would like to hear from you.
